How To Care For GloTetra

The GloTetra is a genetically enhanced variant of the Black Skirt Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi), created to fluoresce in bright neon colors such as electric green, red, blue, orange, and purple. These colors are permanent, passed down through selective breeding, and do not fade with time. Unlike artificial dyeing (which is harmful to fish), GloTetras are naturally born with these fluorescent genes, making them a safe and ethical ornamental fish choice.

GloTetras are peaceful, schooling fish, best kept in groups of 5 or more to reduce stress and display their natural shoaling behavior. They thrive in planted aquariums with dim or blacklight-style LED lighting, which enhances their glowing appearance. Their colors are most vibrant under actinic (blue/UV) lights, but they still appear striking in normal daylight.

In terms of care, they are very hardy and beginner-friendly, tolerating a wide range of water conditions. A balanced diet of flakes or pellets supplemented with frozen or live foods ensures good health and brighter coloration.

Behaviorally, they are active mid-level swimmers, rarely aggressive, though they may occasionally nip fins if kept in too small groups. They make excellent community fish and can be housed with guppies, mollies, danios, rasboras, Corydoras, and dwarf gouramis.

Breeding GloTetras is similar to standard Black Skirt Tetras: they are egg scatterers, laying eggs among plants. However, fry survival is low unless breeding is done in a separate tank. Importantly, their fluorescent colors are inherited naturally, so offspring will also glow.
